Ever wonder how we do our math lessons? We use the CMP math series. This series is heavy in problem solving and group work.
We start our math class with a warm-up activity. The warm-up question can be about a concept already taught or one that will be taught that day. Students are expected to try to solve the question/problem. After a few minutes work time, student can either share their answers or I guide the students to reach the correct answer.
After the warm-up, the homework assignment is reviewed (if one was given). If not, we proceed to the Explore section of our text. This is where students work with their table partners to investigate problem questions related to the current concept being studied. When students have complete their exploration of the investigation, students share math results and ask questions. Afterwards, the assignment is given and explained. Assignments are always written on the assignment board. It is expected that students copy their assignments into their agendas on a daily basis.
In addition to the Explore section of the lesson, students sometimes meet with me on a one-to-one basis for reteaching/reinforcement. They may also partner with other students for enrichment, depending on their interests or needs or perhaps to work on projects given.
